Fraunhofer research is shaping maritime transformation. At SMM 2026, the Waterborne research group will showcase solutions for a digital, sustainable, and competitive shipping industry.

The maritime industry is facing profound changes. Decarbonization, digitalization, automation, and new demands for resilience and competitiveness are shaping the development of shipping, ports, shipyards, and maritime supply chains. There is a need for solutions that combine technological innovation with practical applicability. At the same time, the demand is growing for integrated approaches that bring together environmental, economic, and operational goals.

At SMM 2026, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft will present a broad spectrum of such solutions. Four institutes will demonstrate how application-oriented research contributes to making maritime systems more efficient, sustainable, and future-proof. The exhibits range from intelligent ship navigation and AI-supported assistance systems to simulations and testing technologies, as well as robotics for shipbuilding and innovative laser and joining processes.

Fraunhofer Waterborne

The Waterborne Group of the Fraunhofer Transport Alliance has set itself the goal of supporting the maritime sector with innovative developments to address new challenges.

Fraunhofer IGP

Research at the Fraunhofer Institute for Large Structures in Production Engineering IGP in Rostock focuses on challenges in the production and fabrication of large structures. For more than 25 years, the institute has been conducting research with the goal of making maritime production more flexible, efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly.

At SMM 2026, Fraunhofer IGP will present potential applications of robotics, augmented reality, and digital process mapping for shipbuilding.

 

Fraunhofer ITWM

The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM is one of the largest mathematical research institutions in the world.

At SMM 2026, Fraunhofer ITWM will present a simulation tool for the movement of liquids, for example in tanks and along ship hulls. Innovative, non-destructive testing methods will also be demonstrated.

 

Fraunhofer IWS

The Fraunhofer Institute for Materials and Beam Technology IWS develops complex system solutions in laser and materials technology and sees itself as a source of innovation that develops solutions involving laser applications, functionalized surfaces, and innovations in materials and processes.

At SMM 2026, Fraunhofer IWS will showcase laser technology solutions for maritime applications.

 

Fraunhofer CML

The Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services CML develops innovative solutions for the maritime sector and the maritime supply chain. In this way, it supports companies and organizations in the shipping, port, and logistics industries in initiating and implementing forward-looking technologies and processes.

At SMM, the Fraunhofer CML will showcase new solutions utilizing AI, sensor technology, and quantum computing for safe ports and smart shipping.
