Cells on wheels: Mobile sensor platforms

    © Fraunhofer CML

The mobile sensor platforms help to increase the safety of shipping traffic in the North and Baltic Sea, collects traffic data in compliance with data protection regulations for hazard identification, and promotes innovative technologies for navigation and positioning. The North Sea and Baltic Sea are among the busiest shipping regions in Europe. We test new solutions right here, where they are needed, to keep maritime transport safe and efficient. The platforms' sensors operate passively, do not emit radiation, and do not interfere with the environment. They merely receive technical signals from ships for positioning and navigation purposes, and without collecting any personal data.

    Mobile Sensor Platforms: Scheme

Our four mobile sensor platforms—three CoWs together with the research vessel Vektor—can be used together to create a maritime situation picture. Independent of publicly available data such as AIS signals, the sensors also reliably detect vessels and objects that would otherwise remain undetected. This significantly improves maritime safety in critical sea areas.
